Soft white sandwich bread made from scratch is so easy to make!
It’s a shame more people don’t make it. If you’ve ever read the back of a bread bag, you’d understand why I say that. I can’t believe all the ingredients they can shove into a loaf of bread! And they aren’t the good ingredients either. Here is a nutrition label from a popular brand of bread. It’s pretty eye opening. I counted over 20 different things in that bread. Bread made from scratch is pretty basic. Flour, honey, yeast, water, salt…that’s about it. It’s crazy the things these companies think is okay to put in our food to make money.

Today I want to share with you how to make your own bread, so you don’t have to worry about any of those extra added ingredients that are destroying the peoples health. All you need are some basic ingredients that are most likely in your cabinets already. Trust me, it is going to be worth your time and effort to make your own bread. Every little change you make towards making your own food from scratch will benefit your health. Just be sure to read your labels and make sure you know what is in the ingredients you choose. I know it can coat a little extra, but if you are not using freshly milled flour, it is worth buying the organic unbleached flour. You could even go to your local Natural Grocers and buy some fresh flour from the refrigerated section.
For this recipe I will be using our bread machine. Using a bread machine has really saved me a lot of time when making bread. I just add all of the ingredients and press start. It’s so easy! If you don’t want the oddly shaped loaves, just select the “dough” setting on your machine and when it’s done, remove it from the bread machine mixing bowl and place it in the pan you would like to use.

Tips on making soft white sandwich bread using a bread machine.
- Always put your wet ingredients in your bread machine mixing bowl first, then add your dry ingredients.
- Don’t forget to proof your yeast if you’re using regular yeast! If using rapid rise yeast all you need to do it add the yeast to your dry ingredients.
- The dough in this recipe will be sticky, it will be tempting to add more flour. If you do, don’t add too much or our sandwich bread will come out dry and crumbly!
- Make sure you grease your pan!
- If your bread is not finished baking when the time is up, put it back in the oven for only a couple minutes at a time until it’s finished baking.
How to make bread machine soft white sandwich bread
The very first thing you want to do before you start making your bread is proof your yeast if using regular rising yeast. If you are using rapid rising yeast, you can skip this step.
To proof the yeast, you are going to add the warm water to your liquid measuring cup. After that you will add the sugar and yeast to the liquid measuring cup as well, mix it all together well and set aside for a few minutes until it foams up as shown in the picture below.
After your yeast is proofed, you can add it to your bread machine mixing bowl. Also add your oil. Then you can add all of your dry ingredients.
Place your mixing bowl back into your bread machine once all of your ingredients are in. Select dough setting and wait for it to finish.
Once it is done, you will remove the dough and place it in your bread pan to rise a second time. This dough will be more sticky so it might not form a loaf.
Let your dough rise until it has doubled in size.
Bake at 375 degrees for 25 minutes. Wait until the bread has cooled to remove from the pan. If you skip this step your loaf might break!

Soft White Sandwich Bread
- 1 2/3 c warm water
- 1/4 c honey
- 4 tbsp olive oil
- 4 c flour
- 2 tsp yeast
- 2 tsp salt
- The first thing you need to do is proof your yeast if you are using regular yeast. If you are using a rapid rising yeast, you can skip this step.To proof your yeast, add your 1 2/3 cups of warm water to your liquid measuring cup. Then add your honey and yeast to the warm water in the measuring cup. Mix together well and wait a few minutes for the liquid to turn foamy as shown in the picture above.
- Once your yeast liquid is nice and foamy dump it into your bread machine mixing bowl and add your 4 tablespoons of oil.
- Add all of the rest of your ingredients starting with your freshly milled flour. Then add your 2 teaspoons of salt.
- You're ready to place your mixing bowl back into your bread machine. Once you do so close the lid and select "dough" setting and press start.
- When your dough is done in your bread machine, remove the dough and shape it into a loaf. Place your dough that is well shaped into a greased bread pan. Let rise for about 35 minutes or until doubled in size.
- Preheat your oven to 375 degrees and bake for 25 minutes. When it's done let it cool down until you can handle it with your bare hands, then remove it so the crust that is on the inside of the pan doesn't stay soft and mushy. Let stand until your bread is completely cooled. Then store in a large baggie, bread container, or even cling wrap or aluminum.
- Remember this is fresh bread so it does go bad quicker because we don't add any preservatives. Make sure you eat it within a few days!
